Photographic Workshop 2015

Wow, you have a big bag full of photographic equipment said the lady to another photographer while settling in recently at the Lenzansi Lecture Room at The Cavern. “Yes I know” was the reply, but that is why I joined the Photographic Weekend at The Cavern because I really do not know how to use all this stuff!!!

Three times a year, Derek and Norma present Photographic Workshops at The Cavern to co-inside with the various seasons of the year in the Northern Drakensberg. These lectures are not boring. They are personalized to you and your particular brand of equipment. They are inter-active with practical sessions at various locations on The Cavern nature reserve.

Derek Pearman Hon. FPSSA, FPSSA and Norma Pearman FPSSA, have been professional photographers for many years and for the past 6 years have been travelling to all the photographic highlights in our country plus to Lesotho, Namibia and Botswana. They know the best locations and select 16 weekends per year, all at the peak of nature’s timing.

Saturday morning you are up at the crack of dawn to photograph the sunrise using the distant Drakensberg hills to improve your composition. At all sessions the correct settings are mentioned. As they are noted to be very patient people, they will repeat it many times and ensure everyone gets the picture. A model reflected in Charleswood Dam or with a back drop of The Cavern horses in their stables a short distance off from the dam, is all done before breakfast. After breakfast they take the group to our own waterfall to create more images using the fast and slow shutter speed technique. Said the lady with the big photographic bag, “I did not know I even had such wonderful settings in my camera to make such creative pictures”!!! After lunch, with the horses, we teach how to do ‘fill in flash’ during the day, fast action shots and reflections in the trout dam.

Landscape photography takes place on Sunday morning with early light on the famous Drakensberg Amphitheater and the Tugela River snaking its way through the scene with clouds tinged red from the rising sun. Off to another location where the photographers create images with panoramic views including Zulu kraals and hilly landscapes with wild flowers at the base of their pictures.

The Photographic Course comes to a close on Sunday just before lunch with a lecture on ‘Macro made Easy’. You do not require expensive or special equipment and Norma will show you how so that you can photograph the small things in life.

Each delegate receives a file containing the appropriate notes on all the subjects covered from the Friday to Sunday Photographic Workshop. You will receive the weekend away photo list plus a quarterly newsletter which contains hints and tips, suggested new equipment that they have tested in the field and other related photo info. As a free service, you may contact them at anytime and they will assist you with your photo query.
